REACH : The new European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use published by the European Community (EC) entered into force on June 1st 2007.
The aim of REACH (Registration – Evaluation – Authorisation – Chemicals) is to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances which are being produced, imported and used on EU territory. At the same time, innovative capability and competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry should be enhanced.
Manufacturers and importers of substances of which the quantity exceeds 1T per year will be required to gather information on the properties of their chemical substances and to register the information in a central database run by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki.
A pre-registration phaze is schedules between June 1st 2008 and December 1st 2008 and this for all “phase-in substances” which were introduced on the EU market before September 19th 1981 and registered in the EINECS inventory (European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances). These substances can be found in the ISIS database fot the European Bureau for Chemical Substances.
