{"id":155069,"date":"2015-08-26T13:20:25","date_gmt":"2015-08-26T13:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/climalife.com\/innovative-refrigeration-system-combining-the-best-of-both-worlds\/"},"modified":"2023-07-24T11:19:45","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T11:19:45","slug":"innovative-refrigeration-system-combining-the-best-of-both-worlds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/climalife.com\/ro\/innovative-refrigeration-system-combining-the-best-of-both-worlds\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovative Refrigeration System, Combining the \u2018Best of Both Worlds\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"reference-content\" class=\"textarea mce-content-body\">\n<h3><strong>Creating a More Sustainable Approach to Refrigeration<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to delivering on environmental promises, <strong>Groupe Auchan<\/strong> has an enviable record, having been rated among the <strong>greenest supermarket chains and openly publishing its ambitious annual carbon reduction targets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Part of this eco-commitment involves finding greener ways of operating its stores \u2013 and this includes refrigeration \u2013 so when the company heard about the benefits of a new Honeywell HFO blend \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climalife.dehon.com\/solstice-n13-r-450a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solstice\u00ae N13 (R-450A)<\/a> \u2013 they were keen to test its credentials.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/climalife.dehon.com\/solstice-n13-r-450a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solstice\u00ae N13<\/a>, <strong>recently awarded official ASHRAE classification as R-450A<\/strong>, is an alternative to R-134a, offering similar\u00a0 performance but with a superior <strong>GWP of ~600<\/strong> and is ideally suited to chillers and MT refrigeration (<strong>distributed, CO<sub>2<\/sub> cascade<\/strong>), offering the best non-flammable replacement for R-134a.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/uploadsassetsCase_studiesCC7Auchan2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"136\" \/>Approval was given to design a combined <strong>Solstice \u00ae N13\/CO<sub>2<\/sub> refrigeration system<\/strong> for a\u00a0 new large hypermarket opening in Epinay-sur-Seine (Paris), with measurement criteria\u00a0 focused on <strong>energy efficiency, equivalent CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions reduction and<\/strong> <strong>refrigeration\u00a0 performance<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe test utilised a new design of low energy refrigeration unit and involved a team from <strong>Auchan, the company\u2019s refrigeration partners Axima Refrigeration and Honeywell.<\/strong> The test focused on assessing the merits of a system that incorporated an\u00a0<a href=\"\/case-study\/39\/translate\/de\/The%20test%20focused%20on%20assessing%20the%20merits%20of%20a%20system%20that%20incorporated%20an%20N13%20liquefaction%20unit%20alongside%20a%20CO2%20refrigerated%20distribution%20circuit.%20The%20system%20was%20then%20compared%20with%20Auchan%E2%80%99s%20current%20standard%20set-up%20that%20uses%20R134a%20and%20glycol%20water%20with%20CO2.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N13<\/a>\u00a0 liquefaction unit alongside a CO<sub>2<\/sub> refrigerated distribution circuit. <strong>The system was then compared with\u00a0 Auchan\u2019s current standard set-up that uses R134a and glycol water with CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The results to date have been encouraging, and include:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Easy commissioning, with similar energy efficiency as R-134a.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>global saving of 90 tons CO<sub>2<\/sub> eq\/year<\/strong> compared with a secondary Glycol\/R 134A\/CO<sub>2<\/sub> system and <strong>savings of 960 tons CO<sub>2<\/sub>eq\/year<\/strong> compared with using a standard R404A DX system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Background: Contributing to Groupe Auchan\u2019s Environmental Goals<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Groupe Auchan is at the leading edge of mitigating the ecological footprint generated byits different activities and constantly\u00a0 <strong>strives to innovate in order to lower energy consumption, contribute to the fight against global warming and promote biodiversity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All of the group\u2019s businesses control their energy consumption by setting ambitious annual reduction targets. The installation of smart meters helps the chain to identify waste and to optimize consumption.<br \/>\nTo help meet the European Union\u2019s objective of 20% of all energy usage coming from renewable energy by 2020, <strong>Auchan has invested in solar and geothermal energy over recent years.<\/strong> All new buildings include autonomous energy production systems and, as a result, <strong>more than 55% of energy consumed by Auchan comes from renewable sources<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The refrigeration pilot project at Epinay-sur- Seine is, therefore, entirely in keeping with the context of building a greener operating environment.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Field Test Implementation: Monitoring and Assessing Data<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/uploadsassetsCase_studiesCC7Auchan1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"148\" \/> Groupe Auchan worked alongside its refrigeration partner Axima Refrigeration to develop a system for the Epinay-sur-Seine store that combined the low GWP and energy efficiency benefits of a new refrigeration HFO blend named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climalife.dehon.com\/solstice-n13-r-450a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solstice\u00ae N13 (R-450A)<\/a> \u2013 and the proven performance of pumped CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<br \/>\nThe system uses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climalife.dehon.com\/solstice-n13-r-450a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solstice\u00ae N13<\/a> in a liquefaction unit to convert gaseous CO<sub>2<\/sub> into a liquid that is then pumped to deep freeze containers, cold rooms and display cabinets. The CO<sub>2<\/sub> returns in a gaseous form to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climalife.dehon.com\/solstice-n13-r-450a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solstice\u00ae N13<\/a> liquefaction unit ready for converting again to liquid.<\/p>\n<p>To support the yearly energy saving objectives of the project, the system includes a floating high pressure, a floating low pressure, as well as variable speed control on the compressors of the negative CO<sub>2<\/sub> rig, on the positive N13 compressor and on heat recovery units.<\/p>\n<h3>Field Test Results :\u00a0<strong>Proving the Value of Solstice\u00ae N13 (R-450A)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Since the opening of the Auchan Epinay store in October 2013, a thorough evaluation of the results by the entire project team confirmed the <strong>energy efficiency benefits of the trial<\/strong>.<strong><br \/>\nENERGY CONSUMPTION<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; The Solstice\u00ae N13\/ CO<sub>2<\/sub> system is on par with energy consumption of the standard Groupe Auchan R-134a\/ CO<sub>2<\/sub> system.<br \/>\nThe new system was also measured against the following criteria to ensure the <strong>resulting performance was as good if not better than the current design.<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Discharge temperature at compressor head 110 \u00b0C (Below that of R-134a systems).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Compressor Oil temperature 55\u00b0C (Below that of R-134a systems).<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Sector Perspective: Rolling Out the Benefits of Solstice\u00ae N13<\/h3>\n<p>The Field Test with Groupe Auchan confirms the <strong>energy efficiency benefits<\/strong> of using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climalife.dehon.com\/solstice-n13-r-450a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solstice \u00ae N13 (R-450A)<\/a> alongside CO<sub>2<\/sub> in a cascade system, with additional advantages in terms of CO<sub>2<\/sub> equivalent emissions reduction and much lower GWP (-58%) over\u00a0 traditional refrigerants such as R-134a.<\/p>\n<h3>Feedback: A Greener Outcome for Group Auchan<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201eGroupe Auchan places environmental responsibility at the top of its business agenda and\u00a0 we are very supportive of innovations such asthis new approach to refrigeration that delivers benefits to us as a business, to the customerswe serve and to the wider community.\u201c\u00a0<\/em>JEAN-MICHEL DEROO,\u00a0Auchan Group<\/p>\n<p>\u201e<em>We are continuously looking to apply more sustainable and lower GWP solutions into Supermarkets such as Auchan.
