R-23 is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) designed for very low temperature applications (-60 to -100°C) fitted with piston or rotary compressors.

It is used for the second stage of a cascade refrigeration system, the first stage of which can operate with R-404A or R-507 (climate chambers, freeze-dryers).
